The Beatle Songs — Overview
Todd M. Compton
© 2017 Todd Compton.
This chart focuses on Beatle songs; it includes the major Beatle albums, EPs and singles, from the beginnings to Let It Be. I list only songs that have been professionally released, and I list chronologically by date of release. I treat the U.K. releases as canonical, with a few exceptions. After Let It Be, I list only selected songs of interest — songs written during the Beatle period, or covers performed during the Beatle period. Songs written by the Beatles are given numbers, so I count 278 Beatle songs here. All songs are performed by the Beatles, unless I note otherwise.
The attributions in the column “writer (my attribution)” are not authoritative, just my best educated guess, based on the evidence I have seen. For the data and reasoning behind my attributions in this column, see my book, Who Wrote the Beatle Songs: A History of Lennon-McCartney (now available at Amazon). When I describe a song as “collaboration,” I mean a thoroughgoing collaboration, written together “from the ground up.”
My arbitrary date for the end of the Beatles era songwriting is January 4, 1970, the date the Beatles (at least three of them) appeared in the studio for the last time, to put finishing touches on Let It Be. So this chart includes all songs written by the Beatles before that date. Many of the songs in the early solo albums of the Beatles had been written long before the breakup. Thus they are Beatle songs, though the solo recordings are not recordings by the group.
If we examine the songwriting balance of Lennon and McCartney on specific records, the results show a constant ebb and flow between the two songwriters. To start with the singles — the first Beatles single (“Love Me Do / P.S. I Love You”) was dominated by Paul, both sides; the second single (“Please Please Me / Ask Me Why”) was dominated by John, both sides. So some singles were dominated by one writer. On the other hand, many singles were split—“Strawberry Fields Forever / Penny Lane” had a John song on side A, a Paul song on side B; “Hello Goodbye / I am the Walrus” had Paul on side A, John on Side B. The A Side of a Beatles single was, of course, especially sought after; sometimes, when John had an A side, it was understood that Paul would have the next A side. For instance, after John’s “Day Tripper” in December 1965, the next single was Paul’s “Paperback Writer” in May 1966.
On albums, John, in interviews, said that he dominated in song-production during the early albums, but lay “fallow” in the Sgt. Pepper / Magical Mystery Tour era. Then he was productive again in the White Album. My research has basically supported those perspectives. However, we should also factor in great songs by McCartney during the early albums (such as “I Saw Her Standing There,” “All My Loving” and “Things We Said Today”), and great songs by Lennon when he was supposedly lying fallow. His magisterial “Strawberry Fields Forever” initiated the Sgt. Pepper era, and “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and “A Day in the Life” were key songs on the album.
In addition, one must remember that while one writer, Paul or John, might dominate or begin a song, the other might make a significant contribution to it. So Paul wrote the middle section to John’s “A Day in the Life” and worked on the avant-garde sections in it. On the same album, John helped with the lyrics of Paul’s “She’s Leaving Home” and “With a Little Help From My Friends.” When there was well-documented collaboration on a song, we should take that into consideration. Sometimes we have the ebb and flow between Paul and John within a song.
